Rev Melvin Tinker Senior Minister
I have been Vicar at St John's since 1994 and was previously a student at Hull University where I met my wife, Heather. Three grown up sons and eight grandchildren later, it is still a delight to be part of this great Christian community. As well as the parish keeping me busy, I often undertake speaking engagements around the country and abroad, and I regularly write articles and books on a variety of Christian and theological themes.
Rev Scott McKay Associate Minister (Students & Home Groups)
I was born and raised in a mining village in Barnsley. After various jobs in different locations, I joined the staff of St John's in 2008. I'm married to Laura and we have three children, Benjamin, Ruth and Samuel. Thankfully, all our children share my love of all things 'Star Wars'! I'm passionate about seeing God's people built up in the faith through the teaching of His Word.
Rev Peter Birnie Assistant Minister (Riverside)
An Irish bloke with a Scottish wife, living in Hull, the very pinnacle of England! St John’s has given me the chance to swap the Maths classroom for the pulpit - and what a privilege it is to spend all my time holding out God’s amazing Word to those around! I am married to Joey and we have four brilliant kids. Oh, and I get to study Theology through a Welsh University - set complete!
Heather Payne Ministry Assistant (Children & Families)
I have been on the staff team at St John's since 2002. I love being part of the church family and working with the children and their families. In my leisure time, I enjoy taking part in the park run in Hull's East Park on Saturday mornings.
Geoff Waring Ministry Assistant (Technical & Seniors)
I originally came to Hull for University and have now called it home for a long time! It is surprising how often my ministry as technical co-ordinator (with a passion for sound!) and working with senior members of the church combine. I am married to Rose and we have two teenage daughters. I love cycling in my spare time, and own a tandem!
Richard Hawes Ministry Assistant (Research)
I am a 'Man of Kent' who grew up in the naval dockyard town of Chatham. After a career in operating theatre nursing and reading Biblical Studies at Sheffield University, I joined the staff team at St John's in 2012. I am married to Helen and we have two children, Rose and Thomas. I have a heart for cross cultural Gospel work and small group ministry. In my leisure time, I enjoy historical wargaming and, when I get the chance, I indulge in historical re-enactment.
Viv Whitton Parish Advisor - Strategy & Mission
Before my retirement, I worked as a Clinical Scientist, but I have had a passion for evangelism and world mission since I first became a Christian. I now work with WEC, an international mission agency which focuses on church planting amongst unreached peoples. I lead St John's Missions Committee and I am Chairman of the Newland Christian Trust.
Kay Hampton Ministry Assistant (Riverside Children)
I moved to Hull in 2011 to teach in a primary school but left teaching after a few years to join the ministry trainee programme at St John's. I'm now working full time at Riverside Church and helping out with the young people's work at St John's. It's great to be able to use the skills I learned in my teacher training to teach the children I work with about Jesus. I enjoy music and crafting. I love to sew but I’m not as good as I'd like to be! I also try to do a bit of running and cycling - when the weather is nice enough!
Jess Hayward Ministry Assistant (Student Ministry)
I came to Hull to study law and became a Christian in my final year through the witness of people from St John's. I love working with the students, having benefitted greatly from the student ministry myself. I'm married to Liam and, in my spare time, you'll usually find me reading a good book with a cup of tea!
Sam Patterson Ministry Assistant (Youth & Student Ministry)
I came to Hull in 2011 to study English and, throughout my three years as a student, became more and more involved with the church family at St John's. I'm now a Youth Worker at the church, and love teaching the young people from God's Word, seeing them grow in Christlikeness, and serving the church. In my spare time I enjoy listening to good music, watching a good film, reading a good book, and having a good sleep.
Shirley Godbold Church Administrator
After having taught languages in local schools, I became Parish Administrator in 1995, a very varied and enjoyable job. Outside work, I love eating out and knitting, and I cycle to work every day to keep fit.
We have two Churchwardens at St John's, who are elected by the congregation. In co-operation with our senior minister, they are responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the parish. This includes various aspects of the spiritual and pastoral life of St John's, as well as legal, financial and practical matters such as, for example, the maintenance of the church building. In simple terms, they perform an important role – usually behind the scenes – in helping the smooth running of the church.
Tim Benstead Churchwarden
I have worshipped at St John's since 2000. I am husband to Annette, father and grandfather. I enjoy cycling and I'm a season ticket holder of Hull FC #COYH.
Annette Benstead Parish Safeguarding Representative
I came to St John’s Church in 2000. I have experience of working in the voluntary, statutory and private sector. I am married with two children and two grandchildren. I enjoy time in the country walking and cycling. I am also a Rugby League fan supporting Hull FC.
